Latest trends in glass balustrade systems

The popularity of glass balustrade systems has soared in recent years due to their aesthetic qualities and durability in modern construction. Sleek, unobtrusive glass balustrades are a common sight in many commercial or multi-occupancy residential buildings. The modular nature of the balustrade systems provides architects and specifiers with design and application flexibility, with a variety of choices available.

Advances in glass railings and how they integrate into modern architecture

Glass has revolutionised architectural landscapes all over the world since the introduction of float glass in the mid-twentieth century. Glass and steel constructions have become synonymous with the modern built environment.

Advances in aluminium and stainless steel manufacture have led to the use of glass for diverse architectural glass constructions. Stainless steel and aluminium are ideal materials for high-quality balustrades and balconies due to factors such as component design, material qualities, mechanical functionality, and structural integrity.

Specifying glass balustrades – key criteria

Relevant UK Building Regulations Approved Document K for the Protection from Falling, Collision, and Impact, and BS 6180:2011 Barriers in and around Buildings set out standards that ensure glass balustrades are specified to the required conditions.

Glass balustrades are commonly available in three options – frameless glass balustrade options, glass post systems, or standoffs/point fixings.

GlassParts offers comprehensive technical advice and specification guidance, working closely with Architects, Contracts, Specifiers, Housing Developers and other industry professionals to design beautiful glass balustrading.

Kieran Costello, Managing Director at GlassParts, comments, “Customer service is at the heart of our business. It’s important for our clients to know that we are happy to answer questions or assist with a design problem. We’re much more than just a glass hardware supplier, we are problem solvers.”

The purpose of a glass balustrade is to provide a protective barrier against a drop or change in floor level. So when the floor level change is more than 380mm or on stairs with more than two levels.

According to UK regulations, glass balustrades must also be a particular height to give adequate protection. Internal balustrades (such as staircases, mezzanine floors and ramps) must be 900mm tall, whilst external glass balustrades must be 1100mm tall (e.g. balconies, external staircases).

The load bearings and requirements, which dictate forces applied to the barrier without being compromised or penetrated, are the final consideration for specifying glass balustrades.

There are three main load types to consider – line load, uniformly distributed load (UDL) and concentrated load, and all affect how a glass balustrade looks and performs.
