Why is 316-grade stainless steel better than 304 for balustrades?

When shopping for stainless steel balustrades, you will quickly encounter two main options: 304 grade and 316 grade. Understanding the difference is vital for the longevity of your project.

While 304-grade steel remains an option for indoor use, 316-grade stainless steel is the absolute gold standard for outdoor projects, especially if you live in a coastal area or a harsh environment. The secret lies in its composition; 316-grade steel contains a higher level of chromium, which forms a passive protective layer that makes it significantly more resistant to the elements.

Where can I use stainless steel glass balustrade posts?

One of the greatest strengths of the 48.3mm balustrade post is its chameleon-like ability to suit almost any area. They also allow for the exact same sleek design profile to be seamlessly transitioned from the inside of a property to the outside.

Internally, they are perfect for framing staircases, tight hallways, or landing areas. Externally, they provide robust edge protection for garden timber decking, balconies and patios.

How easy are glass balustrade posts to install?

Gone are the days when metal fabrication required heavy machinery and messy on-site welding. We do that for you and the few components that do need to be added are engineered to “push-fit” (like our top caps) or glued using specialist stainless steel glue. Think of them as a child's building block or model making set, adding each piece one by one to create your clients very own vision.

What type of balustrade posts do we hold in stock?

The following are held in stock for same day dispatch, in both 972mm and 1100mm high posts:

  • 135°  Posts
  • End Posts
  • Corner Posts
  • Centre posts

These can easily mix and match the pre-drilled posts to create your desired space

Can we supply bespoke posts?

Yes, our fabrication team can manufacture bespoke heights, and drill fixing points however you like. With just a short lead time, our skilled staff will manufacture, carefully pack, and dispatch exactly what is needed.

Alternatively, we hold stock of black posts so that these can be drilled and tapped to suit your requirements

Do I need a handrail on the installation?

This very much depends on the installation location and other factors but a very short answer is:

If there is a drop of 600mm or more, yes we would recommend that you use a handrail. Our 48mm posts have been tested to withstand 0.74 Kn loadings (with a handrail) which are commonly needed for both residential and light commercial installations

If it is going to be used internally within a residential dwelling, externally without a 600mm drop, no it is unlikely to be needed.

For more information please speak to a member of our team, structural engineer, or your local building control officer. Our Blog A Glazier’s Guide to BS 6180: Ensuring Your Glass Balustrade Installations are Fully Compliant can also provide a detailed understanding of the regulations that may affect your final choice.

What Glass thickness should be used?

Whilst posts are supplied, pre-packed with 63x45mm glass clamps which hold 10mm as standard, bespoke thickness can be used, by switching the rubber gaskets. The posts can also be fitted with heavy-duty glass clamps for a sleek, transparent heavy duty glass balustrade.

Once again it is important to consider building regulations when making this choice.
